What embracing digitalisation means for workforce productivity

Organisations today are embracing technology at an ever-greater pace to better equip, enable and empower their business for the future and improve efficiencies. From the creation of new business streams to developing a competitive advantage, the CIO’s role is becoming increasingly pivotal in defining the business’s needs and implementing the technology to facilitate change.

It is in industries with a heavy reliance on frontline and field workers – such as logistics, field maintenance, manufacturing and warehousing – where IT leaders are identifying how best they can use advancing technology such as smart glasses to enhance mobile productivity within their organisation.

The element of hands-free working, as well as the opportunity for easier remote collaboration, are seen as vital benefits of smart glasses, and are capabilities which are readily suited to utilities organisations. Toshiba’s recent Maximising Mobility report found that 49 per cent of organisations believe their sector can benefit from this hands-free functionality, while 47 per cent expect smart glasses to deliver improved mobile working, and 41 per cent foresee better collaboration and information sharing.

Take, for example, a washing machine engineer, who could potentially use AR smart glasses to scan the unit to enable a hands-free view of service procedures and schematic overlays – meaning that when a fault becomes a barrier to repair for a less experienced engineer, they are able to use collaboration software to call for assistance from a remote expert. In warehousing too, smart glasses can mean data on specific items can be tracked and monitored digitally, reducing the chances of human error while gathering valuable data that can be analysed with a view to improving logistical efficiency.

Such examples demonstrate the immediate and diverse potential of wearables across industries with a significant proportion of frontline workers.
