The key to transforming the energy network

Electrical energy is an essential part of modern-day living. We rely on it as the main resource for industry and infrastructure, and it also acts as a catalyst for growth and development.

The increase in electricity demand, fuelled by the electrification of transport and heating along with increased living standards globally, brings with it the need for a more flexible and resilient energy network.

The key to transforming the energy network is energy storage. As renewables and onsite generation increases, so does the demand for energy storage – from 3GW in 2016 to 50GW predicted in 2025 (based on HIS Markit figures), which is the equivalent to the annual consumption of 28 million households.

There are various options available, but not all energy storage solutions are created equal, and to help improve grid stability and resilience more innovative solutions are needed. Take the Demand Response Module, from Power Sonic, for example. It imports and exports power from the grid, manages frequency and grid imbalance issues, and can respond to power demand in less than four milliseconds, which means it qualifies for demand-side response incentive programs such as DFFR.

Energy storage solutions such as the Demand Response Module offer network providers a more responsive and flexible asset than the more traditional infrastructure used for basic grid operation. Energy storage as an alternative to upgrading lines and towers saves time, in terms of build and cost. Not just that, but innovative energy storage solutions will also provide added benefits such as voltage regulation, load shifting and the ability to add additional storage when required, allowing networks to only invest in what they need.

With energy storage we can create a more resilient and reliable energy network that can enable the intelligent interaction of micro-grids, distributed storage and distributed generation.
