Channelling passion into entrepreneurship

Zana Goic Petricevic at Bold Leadership Culture explains how business leaders can discover their “passionpreneurial” mindset

In my work with leaders around the world, I often witness a profound, quiet struggle beneath the surface of success. Despite impressive careers, enviable titles, and the outward appearance of achievement, many leaders confess privately to feeling uninspired, stuck, or even numb. They have traded their passion for predictability, their courage for comfort, and their bold dreams for the safety of the status quo.

They lead, yes, but they do so from a place of obligation rather than aliveness.

This is precisely why I speak so often about what I call the “passionpreneurial” mindset. It is not simply about entrepreneurship, about starting a business or pivoting careers. Rather, it is a way of seeing, choosing, and leading, a mindset inviting you to reclaim your boldest, most daring self and channel your passion into meaningful, impactful work.

Why does this matter for leaders today?

The world is changing faster than ever. Our workplaces are evolving, our societies are fragmenting, and our expectations of leadership are shifting. In this world on the edge, what we need are leaders who are fully alive to their purpose. Leaders who understand that work is not just about profit or productivity but about realising the deepest longings of the human soul.

Yet, so many leaders remain disconnected from this truth. They rationalise away their desires for passion-driven work as impractical or immature, telling themselves stories about security, responsibility, and stability. But underneath, there is a quiet ache, a hunger for more.

What is a passionpreneurial mindset?

The passionpreneurial mindset is a commitment to aligning what you do with who you are at your most alive. It’s about recognising that your work can and should be an expression of your deepest values, your boldest dreams, and your unique capacity to create impact. It’s a mindset rooted in agency, in the belief that you hold the power, and thus the responsibility, to shape your own leadership landscape.

We are all born with the potential for boldness and are capable of courage. The only question is whether we are willing to activate it.

The first step: asking bold questions

Discovering your passionpreneurial mindset begins with honest, uncomfortable questions. What are you aching to contribute? What change are you willing to risk your comfort for?

In my book Leading on the Edge, I speak often of "mirror moments”, those reflective pauses where you dare to look inward and confront the truths you’ve been avoiding. Ask yourself:

  • Am I merely fulfilling expectations, or am I bringing my boldest self to my work?
  • What is the legacy I want to leave through my leadership?
  • If I had no fear of failure, what bold idea would I bring to life?

These are not easy questions as they require courage, honesty, and the willingness to disrupt your current thought narrative.

Why do leaders struggle to find this mindset?

One of the most pervasive challenges I observe is leaders have confused security with success by remaining in roles, industries, or strategies that feel safe, even when those choices slowly erode their sense of meaning and possibility.

This is often rationalised with phrases like:

  • “Now isn’t the right time.”
  • “I can’t afford to take that risk.”
  • “That’s not how things are done here.”

Yet, as I remind my clients, the cost of staying stuck is far higher than the risk of change. Mediocrity might protect you from immediate failure, but it will rob you of vitality, innovation, and authentic impact.

Choosing passion over safety

Terence McKenna’s words resonate deeply with me: This is how magic is done. By hurling yourself into the abyss and discovering it’s a feather bed. To choose passion is to choose uncertainty, yes, but it is also to choose life.

In my experience, leaders who embrace this mindset do not do so because they feel fearless; they do so because they are willing to act despite fear. They trust themselves to navigate the unknown, to learn through experimentation, and to create new possibilities where none existed before.

This is what I call walking on the edge, that space where discomfort meets growth, where bold ideas meet real-world action.

Cultivating the passionpreneurial mindset

So how can you, as a leader, begin to cultivate this mindset in practical terms?

1. Reconnect with what makes you feel alive

Reflect on the moments in your work where you’ve felt most energised, most aligned, most purposeful. What themes emerge? What patterns can you see? These are clues to your true leadership calling.

2. Challenge the false safety of mediocrity

Examine where you’ve settled for “good enough.” Ask yourself what bold risks you’re avoiding and why. Recognise that playing small is often the riskiest choice of all because it keeps you from evolving.

3. Trust your agency

Agency is not just a concept; it’s a practice. Start small if necessary, but begin making decisions that align with your values and your bold vision. Trust you have the capacity to influence your landscape for change.

4. Surround yourself with other bold leaders

Community matters, seek out those who are also walking on the edge, those who refuse to settle for less and let their courage fuel your own.

5. Learn to love the discomfort of growth

The passionpreneurial mindset thrives not in ease, but in challenge. Reframe discomfort as evidence that you are stretching, evolving, and moving toward something meaningful.

Why this matters more than ever

In a world that often feels absurd, fragmented, and broken, the leaders we need are those willing to create beauty from chaos, meaning from uncertainty, and change from conviction. The passionpreneurial mindset is not a luxury, it is a necessity for those who wish to lead with integrity and impact.

If you are reading this and wondering if you’re ready, let me be clear: you are. You don’t need permission, you don’t need perfect timing, what you need is the courage to decide.

Why not you? Why not now?

The world is waiting for leaders who are bold enough to believe in the power of their own passion. I invite you to be one of them.
