Smart data and insight-driven approaches to water use are enabling businesses to perform better while cutting costs, energy and carbon emissions
To stay relevant and competitive in the face of today’s evolving supply chain challenges, it’s more critical than ever for businesses to drive efficiencies and cut their environmental impact. And effective water management is one element of the equation that can help boost performance and reduce overheads.
Wholesaler price increases for business water hit in April 2025, and analysis showing the scale of water scarcity in the UK predicts a shortfall of almost five billion litres a day by 2050 if no actions are taken by businesses to reduce its use.
Water Plus, a leading business water retailer, provides solutions that cut water use, energy consumption and carbon emissions, and which save time. Its services and partnerships are helping businesses focus more on growing their presence, influence, customer base and results.
Super-charging savings with water partnerships and better data
Improved water data and site reviews can identify areas for efficiencies and help reduce risks to operations by spotting any issues with water before they become significant.
One way to do this is by providing more frequent meter readings to your business water retailer, if the water meter’s safe to access. This helps update your account information and reduce bills based on estimated use, so you just pay for what’s used, helping budgeting and cost tracking. And with Water Plus’s online MyAccount, single and multiple meter readings can be uploaded in seconds.
For extra water data during the year – and for meters that are difficult, or not safe, to access for reads – data loggers can be added to water meters to gain additional data and insights. They provide data breakdowns each day, tracking water use at sites, and they also remove the need for manual walkaround checks, saving time.
Water audits can help businesses find more areas to save money if low-cost efficiency devices were installed through the services Water Plus can provide, with one of Water Plus’s customers seeing a 46 per cent water saving on estimated annual water use identified at one of its sites.
Small water-saving devices could help reduce water spend by an estimated £6,800 in wholesaler water costs over a 12-month period, the water saving audit at the site found. A loose connection on a pipe at the same business, which was causing water loss, was also tightened and fixed during the water audit site visit, one of the advanced services Water Plus can provide.
Efficiency devices driving solutions for business water
By installing small data-logging devices on water meters, Water Plus helped one multi-site organisation to move forward with its sustainability plans and track results.
A 34.4 per cent saving in average daily water use was tracked by the data logger, after low-cost efficiency devices were also installed through Water Plus in 2025.*These small devices, installed on taps and which include flush-saving technology, can also help cut energy use (and, by extension, carbon emissions created by business water use) by reducing the amount of hot water needed.
Another multi-site’s location reduced its water use in 2025, with an estimated £48,000 saving across 12 months in running costs, after benefitting from the proactive customer engagement approach and data tracking technology Water Plus can provide in its services.
By feeding information from a data logger installed through Water Plus into an online analysis portal, we discovered that the site was wasting an extra 1,900 litres of water per hour. A subsequent site visit revealed an underground leak from a pipe supplying a staff accommodation building, which was repaired.
Water reuse – from rainwater harvesting to using heated water multiple times – can be another great way to tap into further efficiencies at businesses to reduce water consumption and cost. While a bigger initial cost may be involved in bringing in these approaches and devices that change the way water is used, the payback time can quickly give a return on investment through increased efficiencies and a reduction in other costs.
Effective water management that helps businesses focus on growth
Halal Kitchen Ltd, a national food company which tracks its water use during the year and takes water-saving actions, has chosen Water Plus as its partner for business water services, including billing, meter reading and customer service, as it looks to grow its operations.
Sohel Patel, Managing Director of Halal Kitchen Ltd, which operates and owns Express Cuisine, manufacturing and distributing chilled and frozen foods in the UK, and which opened a London depot last year, said: “Water is an absolutely vital part of our operation, so having a reliable and trusted business water partner is a must for us – which is why we’re continuing to be with Water Plus.
“We continually look at how we use water at our business during the year, so we’re working efficiently, as we continue to provide high-quality food products for the UK. We also engage with all our employees and highlight the steps to take, so that extra water isn’t being used when it’s not needed.
“We’ve established ourselves as a leader in the UK for supplying fresh halal chilled foods – and continuing to be with Water Plus, as a reliable and efficient partner for our water services provides a strong base as we continue our plans to grow in the future.
“Its MyAccount platform is easy to use and makes it effortless to update our account information and provide our meter readings, which reduces bills based on estimates.”
Planning for the future with water resources
Water Plus doesn’t just help businesses save water. A water contingency plan for your sites means you’re more prepared for supply interruptions, which could have the potential to stop production, suspend services and harm revenue streams.
Water Plus can help with action plans, providing bulk water deliveries of 10,000 to 30,000 litres to fill reservoirs or storage tanks, or to inject directly into your network. Bottled water can also be supplied in large quantities if the supply of drinking (or potable) water was to stop.
Leaks on site water pipes can stop water flows, causing interruptions to operations. To improve future resilience, sites seeing consistent leaks can also have a review of their pipework undertaken by Water Plus to check integrity and pressure. The process identifies whether any water pipes need replacing and helps business contingency planning and resilience.
