One of the industries most impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic was undoubtedly entertainment. But it was a time when the King Brasstards brand only grew in profile.

“We adapted to fit the times we found ourselves in, setting up our HQ for live streaming and even delivering school workshops from the studio via Zoom and Microsoft Teams,” explains company director and sousaphone player Steve Nutter. “The content that we were able to put out during this time has really helped keep the name out there, and we flourished coming out of the pandemic as the world went back to normal.”

This hard work has certainly paid off, particularly in the sporting arena, as the band have had the honour of performing at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, backing Team GB at the Billie Jean King Cup, as well as featuring at The Hundred cricket matches, Formula One at Silverstone, Leicester Tigers Rugby fixtures, Premier League football games and showpiece basketball finals events.

The band are certainly not intimidated by the big occasion, as their TV appearances on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent, Channel 4, BBC Red Button, BT Sport and Sky Sports will attest. Their corporate client list has also grown, with the addition of household name brands such as SkyBet and Boohoo, and they performed at the Travel Industry Awards at London’s prestigious Rosewood Hotel in 2022. At this event, as with so many others, the band had the surprise element in being able to perform from anywhere in the room before making their way to the stage to create an unforgettably fun and joyous atmosphere.

Fellow company director and co-frontman Gareth John explains how the band also look to employ all the talents of their members. “One advantage we have is being able to deliver everything from a short, fun, roaming performance at a drinks reception to a full stage show. Obviously, we have very accomplished musicians within our ranks, but there are also skilled DJs, magicians and a lot of audio-visual expertise,” says John. “This means that we can successfully take care of an entire event when it comes to entertainment. We’ve also arranged the music so that it works with everything from a three- to seven-piece band, so there’s complete flexibility from both our and the client’s point of view.”

Forming in 2015, King Brasstards were one of the first funky brass bands in the UK, and have since positioned themselves as a first-class entertainment outfit. With two very different vocalists, the group’s performances are fun, accessible and varied, with catering to client wishes being a key factor.

Collectively, the band’s members have worked with The Specials, The Happy Mondays, Paul Weller, The Jam and The Beautiful South, Stephen Mulhern, Tom Grennan, Shed 7 and many more. This is reflected in the band’s repertoire, while always keeping the funky New Orleans-infused twist as the undercurrent in everything they do. With two albums to their name and a third in production, the key to the band’s success and longevity is in their flexibility of approach and business-savvy work ethic, having provided regular employment for over 30 musicians over the past few years. Entertainment and client satisfaction are their joint number one priorities, and their star continues to rise.
